The Water@UTM Initiative is an interdisciplinary and collaborative research & training initiative bringing together experts from a range of disciplines including civil engineering, environmental management and business, interested in water related issues in Malaysia and the wider continent of Asia. The initiative is coordinated by the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) based at the International Campus in Kuala Lumpur.
Aim and Objective
The aim of the Water @ UTM initiative is to promote and mobilise research and training activities in water related topics specific to Malaysia and Asia as a whole.
The initiative will draw on the expertise and experience of people from different academic and professional disciplines, including international experts and organisations.
The objective is to create opportunities for high quality research collaborations, establish and coordinate training programmes and develop a network of water professionals united in their common interest in water research.
Directors of the Initiative
Christopher Preece
Christopher Preece is a Professor of International Construction Business in the Department of Civil Engineering. His research interests include the development and implementation of sustainable and socially responsible management practices in the engineering and water sector.
Supiah Shamsudin
Supiah Shamsudin is an Associate Professor in Water Resources and Hydrology in the Department of Civil Engineering at UTM. Her research interests include urban stormwater management, watershed and reservoir management, environmental hydrology, reservoir eutrophication, and multi-criteria decision support systems for water resources systems.
Rory Padfield
Rory is a Lecturer in the Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology having joined in April 2010. His primary research interest is water policy reform in developing countries having undertaken a PhD at Newcastle University examining water sector commercialisation in sub-Saharan Africa.
Effie Papargyropoulou
Effie is a Lecturer at Razak School of UTM In Engineering and Advanced Technology. Her research interests include resource efficiency, sustainable waste management and climate change mitigation in the built environment.
Deliverables
Anticipated deliverables from the Water@UTM KL Initiative include:
Production of high quality research collaborations with the aim of publishing in high impact journals
Encouragement of potential joint UTM/Leeds research (and other UK universities).
PhD and Masters research projects.
Creation of an international network of researchers interested in water in the Asian context.
Distribution of information to water network regarding upcoming events and news, new published research, opportunities for funding etc.
Establishment of links with international researchers working in related fields
